The Ki that opened up my life

Mai’s story

I started Aikido on March 5th, 1998 at Brixton Ki Aikido club under Sensei Ros Davies. I was completely overwhelmed and over-powered by the other students, who were green belts and above.

After three months, I abandoned my pursuit, feeling inadequate. At age 28, living alone and withdrawn from social connections, I discovered a poster at Brixton library advertising the club. Despite initial hesitation, I called and attended class.

The turning point came through observing Sensei Ros.

Two factors enabled my progress — the instructor’s generosity and precision, plus a safe learning environment where I never felt overwhelmed despite practising with advanced students.

Mind & Body

No mystique, no secret

The principles are all written and displayed in the dojo. The coordination of mind and body principles provided conceptual understanding, particularly the “One Point” concept which felt very stabilising and powerful.

This shifted eventually to studying Aikido to live life. Sensei Ros guided me through 3rd Dan — a journey of dedication that transformed how I understood myself and the world around me.

A Lifelong Practice

Ki Aikido through life’s changes

Life changes followed: in 2007, a relocation to Cambridge with two daughters; in 2014, a move to Scotland. Throughout these transitions, Ki Aikido clubs remained accessible — always just ten to twenty minutes away.

My partner became my instructor — Sensei James Knight. The continuity of the Federation meant that wherever life took me, I could always find a dojo and a community that felt like home.

Reflection

Swimming in the sea

A recent realisation emerged during a 5th Dan group course taught by Sensei Margaret — a moment of clarity about how far this journey has come and how boundless it still feels.
